Methods Seminar (summer 2013)

Research with social protagonists: On the genesis and present state of horizontal research methods in Latin America

Instructors

Wiebke Keim, Anika Meckesheimer

Description

Starting with classic texts, such as the "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" by Paolo Freire (1970) and the participative action research of Orlando Fals Borda (1959, 1991), we will pose the question of the subject and benefit of knowledge production on social issues. On the basis of present experiences and texts about research with, and not only about, social agents, we will address the options and limits of horizontal research within the existing academic frame.

Committed social scientists as well as social movements in different countries in Latin America have lately called for forms of knowledge production in which the content, the method of its acquisition, and also the way of presenting the results of research ought to be negotiated between academics and the social actors about whose lifeworlds the research is conducted. Hence we could speak of a re-negotiation of  epistemological hegemony. The analysis of our own social and cultural standpoint and perception pattern, and the relation between social commitment and research will be an essential component here.

The working profile of the seminar will follow the methods to be studied, and some elements of Popular Education and Participative Action Research will be integrated into the seminar units. The literature to be read will be mainly in English.
